He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. Revelation 19:16
It was Roman custom for a criminal who was crucified to have a sign placed above their head stating their crime. When you see pictures of Jesus on the cross, you often see different languages: Aramaic, Latin and Greek. You may have also seen a sign with the letters INRI which is the abbreviation of "Jesus of Nazareth, The King of the Jews." In John's gospel, he refers to the inscription as a "title." Matthew and Mark's gospels refer to it as an "accusation." Since Pilot could find no fault with Jesus, he ordered this to be written above His head: This is Jesus, The King of the Jews. These words were not written as a title or a statement of fact. They were written as a mockery. The accusation from Pilot was that Jesus "claimed" to be the king of the Jews.
If you are a child of the King, you know these words to be true - not only for the Jews, but for anyone who puts their faith and trust in Him. You realize that Jesus was not there for any crime of His own (for He is sinless), but to pay the penalty for every sin you and I would ever commit. So why is it that we don't refer to Jesus as King in our everyday language? Charles Spurgeon probably figured that out. He said, "Men might be willing for Christ to save them, but not for Him to reign over them." Why is that? Could it be that we want Jesus to swoop in and save us when we have a need, otherwise we prefer to handle things on our own? Is it possible that you, as I myself must confess, have a strong desire to be in control? When we call Jesus our King, we are saying that He rules and reigns over everything in our lives. Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I'm going to stop and offer my King praise as I sing:
"Praise the Father, praise the Son,
Praise the Spirit, three in one.
God of glory, Majesty.
Praise forever to the King of Kings!"
